I’ve been asked, “Why did you decide to create RunFASD?”
Well, I love to run, and dreamed of creating a race for a cause since pre Covid times. My mom also suggested it.
I became a member of the FASD community 10 years ago, when I was diagnosed with FAS. In those 10 years, my friend and family circles have expanded. Caregivers, parents, and other self advocates welcomed me into their community. I became friends with others who had a brain like mine. I was embraced by caregivers who took me in as their own child even though I was in my mid 30s.
In 2021 I was asked on a podcast where I saw myself in five years, and my answer was, “creating a virtual 5k.” Of course the follow up question was, “ For what?” I had just had this discussion with my mom, who suggested a run for FASD. So, in 2021, with FASD United by my side, RunFASD began. Accolades for the name go to my supportive husband, Jason. A perfect name for a perfect cause.
We at RunFASD understand not everyone can run. We understand people have different abilities. Participants can run, walk, roll, horse ride…you find a way to RunFASD, and do it. RunFASD doesn’t discriminate.
The goal of RunFASD is to help make FASD visible, to have communities join hearts and learn from one another’s FASD journeys. RunFASD is for those that have never heard of FASD. They can join a RunFASD event and learn. All proceeds go to FASD United. I invite you to check out RunFASD. Join a community event or create your own. It’s a 5k YOUR WAY! Through RunFASD, friendships form, communities come together, and awareness is brought forth.
